What’s the point of repainting Britain’s past?

An initiative by English Heritage aims to challenge the myth that people of colour have only recently been present in Britain. Too often marginalised Britons have been painted out of the picture of the national story. In reality they’ve been an integral part of British culture for centuries but often ignored or eclipsed. English Heritage have invited six artists to portray historical figures, such as Emperor Septimius Severus, whose connections with Africa and Britain have rarely been acknowledged.
