Abolition: Or, the Art of Forgetting
SpeakySpokey: WritersMosaic Live Events
In the second event of our collaboration with the British Library, as WritersMosaic’s Gabriel Gbadamosi published his play Abolition, he was joined by the writer and cultural critic Bonnie Greer and the historian S.I. Martin to explore Britain’s role in the Atlantic slave trade. They examined Britain’s propagandistic promotion of the part it played in the abolition of the trade and its wilful amnesia about its large-scale abduction of Africans in the trade.
Here’s an extract of evening at the British Library that included sea shanties from Abolition recalling English maritime experience, performed John Dipper and Dave Malkin, and a screen of montage images of the English slave trade created by MissOhio.
The full version of the evening will be published on WritersMosaic very soon.
