One of WritersMosaic’s animating principles is to give writers of the global majority a chance to step out of the lane of writing expected of them, in which, crudely speaking, they’re told to focus on matters of race and to only write about people of the same phenotype. To a degree, the inverse is also true, with white writers nervous about writing about ‘black subjects’ and discouraged from doing so. Everyone is being schooled to stay in their lane to avoid risking accusations of taking up space better occupied by an ‘expert’ with more skin in the game, or of cultural appropriation.

On the fifth anniversary of WritersMosaic Magazine, the editor Colin Grant was joined by writers Will Harris, Maggie Gee, Hannah Lowe and Amy Abdelnoor to reflect on the limits of empathy, and the risks and rewards of straying from your lane.
