Chloé Zhao becomes the first female director of colour to win an Oscar

Chloé Zhao has won an Oscar at the 2021 ceremony for directing Nomadland. Her success marks the first time a female director of colour has taken the top honour. Zhao, who was born in China and studied in the UK before settling in the USA, brings a sharp outsider’s eye to this tender and moving tale of the ‘new nomads’ in the USA who travel the country, living in vans, escaping the expense and unemployment of their previous lives. Though fictional, the film is inspired by the non-fiction book, Nomadland, written by the investigative journalist, Jessica Bruder, who spent several years on the road charting the nomadic lives of these pioneering north Americans.
