Mosaic Monologues

A new series where dramatists share their stories in their own voices. This first collection brings together stories ranging from the surreal to the intimate: a doctor performing lobotomies to purgatory on a bus.

"To listen to these amazing bite-sized stories and the characters brought to life by the writers is fantastic."

Mosaic Monologues is a platform for dramatists to share their stories in their own voices. Born from a conversation in the Italian countryside with Colin Grant, Director of WritersMosaic, the idea was simple yet powerful: to create space for artists across the nation to express themselves freely, through a dynamic multi-media stage.

What began as an ambitious dream is now a reality. This first collection brings together voices from Wales and Scotland, from Yorkshire to Lancashire, and from the north-east of England.

In ‘The before & the after’, by Shahid Iqbal Khan, a doctor reflects on the practice of lobotomy. Mara Menzies explores the voice of fear itself, while Connor Allen imagines purgatory on a bus heading for an unexpected destination. Nabeela Ahmed’s story, ‘A woman’s work’, charts the weight of labour carried by a wife and mother, and Tahmina Ali explores a woman breaking out from the weight of expectation that constrains her. Last of the six, ‘The prophecy’ by Testament, focuses on a black man who has a Blakean encounter as he attempts to leave the country.

Thought-provoking, funny, and heartfelt, the dramas showcase the immense imagination and talent of WritersMosaic writers across the UK. The power of the dramas is amplified by the newly-commissioned signature tune, composed by Louie Johnston-Ward.

This is only the beginning. WritersMosaic will soon be searching for the next group of dramatists whose work will expand and enrich this mosaic of voices.

The first series of Mosaic Monologues was directed by me and executive produced by John Siddique. As you will hear in my recorded conversation with John, the monologues affirm that the work of global majority artists is as urgent and vital as any other.
